Introduction

Different cultures have different concepts of what can and cannot be eaten. This is perhaps the reason why the concept "unusual recipes" came into being. For instance, in the United States, a cricket is a pest. Therefore, it should not and cannot be eaten. And with this, you're sure to get puzzled looks at the mere mention of a cricket dish in the country. Conversely, most Asian countries may find it unusual that Westerners prefer to eat bread for breakfast instead of rice. There is an obvious cultural bias when it comes to food consumption, so when people go to other countries, almost all of them would like to try an unusual local delicacy.

But you don't have to go to Southeast Asia to eat an unusual dish. As a matter of fact, you can create your own unusual recipes right at the confines of your home.

How to Create Your Own Unusual Recipes

Based from unusual dishes served in other countries, here are some tips and guidelines in creating your own unusual recipe.

1. Experiment with flavors.

If you want to come up with a crazy-tasting dish, you need to start by creating an unusual flavor combination. Sweet-and-sour and sweet-and-salty combinations are normal to many people (and thus, not unusual), so you can try something else by experimenting with proportions or introducing a third component. Take note, however, that the idea is to create a combination that sounds crazy but is not gross to eat.

2. Combine the unthinkable.

Did you know that you can create an oatmeal cookie topped with a square of bacon? If you think this is unimaginable, wait until you take a bite. It tastes heavenly. If you want to create an unusual recipe such as this, try to be imaginative and creative. Explore possibilities, and don't stop asking questions such as "What happens if I add this to this?" and "How will tomatoes and cheese taste like when they are eaten together?"

Following the same principle, you can even combine two cuisines. If you love Italian and Portuguese cuisines, you might want to create spaghetti (Italian) with sauce made of seafoods (Portuguese).

3. Turn a meat-based dish into a purely vegetarian meal.

If you're health conscious, you might want to experiment on creating an all-veggie meal to substitute the meat components of your favorite dish (or snacks). For instance, you might want to create vegetarian brownies by adding fruits, nuts, beans, and other plant-derived components.

Conclusion

There are many other ways that you can do to create an unusual recipe. The trick is to never stop experimenting with your ingredients. So play around with the proportions, and don't stop being creative.
