This post brought to you by Walgreens. All opinions are 100% mine.

Over the past year, Walgreens and Express Script have been negotiating a new contract to continue as part of its pharmacy provider network. Sadly, those negotiations were unsuccessful, and their contract expired on December 31, 2011. I read the press release about the controversial disagreement between Walgreens and Express Script. Caught off guard and in the middle to this controversy is the customers who have Express Scripts plan with Walgreens as their trusted pharmacy. So, if you have prescription coverage, check the back of your card. If you see an Express Script logo, your ability to receive discounted prescriptions at your local Walgreens is probably affected.

Members of Express Script used to go to Walgreens pharmacies because they provided convenience via open 24-hour service and drive-thru counters. Customers are unhappy with the development. They say that the costs of their medications have not gone down and at the same time they experience additional stress whenever they have to replenish their prescriptions. Personally, I have never used another pharmacy other than Walgreens. Their service to my family and I has been really wonderful.

The good news is that Walgreens is planning on expanding some discounts to users who formerly used Express Script and now want to continue to have those Walgreens benefits. They are offering a special discount on an annul membership to their Walgreens Prescription Savings Club for $10 a year you can get a family membership that will include everyone on your immediate family.  Including your spouse and any dependent 22 years old or younger even your pets. Individuals can join and enjoy discounts for only $5.

Benefits include:

  • Savings on more than 8,000 brand-name and all generic medications
  • Discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, nebulizers and diabetic supplies
  • Bonuses when you purchase Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services
